Meek Mill Team Up With Miguel In New Song Stay Woke Addressing Inequalities In The Criminal Justice System
Meek Mill yesterday night premiered his new track “Stay Woke” on the BET Awards stage. A few hours later after the performance the song was officially released on digital stores.
The new track, featuring Miguel, is a poignant commentary that showcases the best of Meek’s growth since his release from prison. “Stay Woke” offers up the perspective of man with a new purpose in putting up a fight on behalf of his community.
When previewing the track earlier last week, the Philadelphia-bred rapper reflected on his time in prison, recognizing that not everyone has the luxury of a community of fans and influential peers to catalyze change in their own situations when stuck in the criminal justice system.
“A lot of people stuck in their positions, they don’t got resources,” he noted. “I always felt like I was responsible to reach back for a few and help them move forward and help them get light shed on their situation.”
Produced by Mike DZL, the Philly rapper’s latest single finds him taking a more socially conscious approach following his recent release from prison, as he touches on the justice system, Black-on-Black violence, police brutality, drug culture and more.
“We scream, ‘Black Lives Matter,’ but we still toting ladders
Watching our own brothers trying to get at us
Dreams get shattered when a scene full of crackers
And they charge you with some shit you ain’t do
